The Castle of San Antón in A Coruña: A Historic Monument and Symbol of the City

The Castle of San Antón, a 16th century fortress located on A Coruña’s seafront, stands as a witness to the city’s defensive past and attracts tourists and historians alike for its rich history and unique architecture. This ancient fortress, which began construction in 1587, has played a crucial role in the defense of A Coruña against maritime attacks and now houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum.

From the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries it was a defensive building and prison, later it was used as a lazaretto to isolate sailors who arrived in the city affected by an infectious disease.

The castle, originally built on an island that at low tide was connected to the mainland, has seen its surroundings transform over the centuries. Today, it is easily accessible from the mainland and remains one of the city’s most iconic historic structures. The museum inside the castle offers a fascinating collection ranging from prehistory to modern history, with special emphasis on the maritime history of Galicia.

Curiosities are not lacking in San Antón Castle, such as secret subway tunnels and tales of former prisoners. This place not only offers a window into the past, but also provides breathtaking views of the coast of A Coruña.
