Sintra’s Historical Centre

Sprawled under the shadow of the magnificent Castle of the Moors is the Sintra Historic Center. Riddled with a labyrinth of winding streets, the historic center is the most prominent cultural hub of the town. Home of the well-preserved National Palace of Sintra, the historic center is rightfully your portal to the heritage of the town. Owing to the high footfall of tourists, the center boasts an array of al fresco restaurants and cafes. Your sojourn of Sintra is incomplete without a tour of the Sintra Historic Center.

Chalet Biester

Designed by architect José Luiz Monteiro and built in the last decades of the 19th century, surrounded by an extensive and majestic Botanical Park by the famous landscaper François Nogré, the building constitutes an unparalleled example of Portuguese Romantic architecture, also containing works by established artists. such as Luigi Manini, Leandro de Souza Braga and Paul Baudry.

Viewpoint of the Wooden Doors
Lake of Castelo dos Patos

In the deep, covered valley to the west of the palace is the Vale dos Lagos, which constitutes an invigorating and refreshing end to the Da Pena Park tour.

Originally a stream ran through the valley, but it was later dammed, resulting in 5 lakes.

The most notable elements are the two extravagant duck houses, one in the center of the lake (imitating the Moorish castle) and a second that has many similarities with the Pena Palace.

Castle of the Moors

Isolated on its lofty perch, one of the peaks in the Sintra Hills, the Moorish Castle is a fortification founded in the 10th century during the period the Moors occupied the Iberian Peninsula.

Its famous walls snake across the hills with their granite blocks interlinking boulders and cliffs.

Its parapet walk provides stunningly unique views out over the town, the Palace of Pena and, further in the distance, the greens of these hills contrast with the blues of the Atlantic Ocean.
