Despite the bad reputation given by its climate, the city of A Coruña is full of beautiful locations everyone who visits it falls in love with. Opened to the sea, this city is full of jewels, green spaces, popular monuments and other that are not so much, as well as beautiful streets that you can not miss if you want to go home with the best memories captured in photographic format.
In this article we will give you our suggestions of places to visit in order to capture in an image the beauty of A Coruña.
Windows of the Marina
One of the most emblematic images of the city is the one you can see from the Avenida de la Marina when you look at the buildings that make it up. The iconic arcades under the even more iconic white and stained-glass windows have earned A Coruña the title of “city of glass”.
This architectural landmark is also one of the favourite leisure spots of the locals, who enjoy its terraces, promenade and playground for kids whenever the sun shines. The masts of the ships moored in the port and the sea views complete the postcard image.
Capitán Troncoso street
This residential street may be one of the most photographed spots in the city, but it is not because of the panoramic view, as it does not have one, or because of the cultural and artistic interest of the enclave. What makes Capital Troncoso Street so popular between locals and visitors alike is the beauty that the street presents when accessed from above. Each building is painted a different colour, all in pastel tones, and together they present a fairytale look. The town hall building looms behind, closing the picture.
Any photograph taken from here will capture an iconic and recognizable street in the city of A Coruña, but it has an additional perk, and that is that it is hardly ever busy. There are no cars to spoil the picture or pedestrians crossing in the background.
Tower of Hércules
The Tower of Hercules is the symbol par excellence of the city of A Coruña. In fact, it is represented in the centre of its coat of arms. Of course, this building is not only important for the Galician city, as it is the oldest working lighthouse in the world, and since 2009 it has been recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Some of the most iconic photographs of A Coruña have been taken from its base, as it allows a panoramic view of the city at sea level. Access to the top is permitted, where you will see the ocean from a totally different perspective: the heights.
Due to its privileged position, from here you can also glimpse other parts of the nearby coast, and even the Sisargas Islands, in Malpica de Bergantiños.
Promenade
The views of the Atlantic Ocean from the Orzán-Riazor promenade are so spectacular that it is common to find the people of A Coruña stopping during their walks to photograph the waves and the surfers in them.
In fact, some of the most beautiful images of this enclave have been taken from one of the ends of the inlet, either from the rocks in front of the Riazor stadium or on the other side, past the surfers’ fountain, in the so-called Pérgola de las Lagunas. From there, in fact, when the tide is low, you can see the statue of a mermaid on the rocks reminding bathers of the dangers of the open sea.
Perhaps the picture drawn by the houses, buildings and arcades of this area is one of the most characteristic images of the city, and certainly the favourite of its inhabitants.
Monte de San Pedro
If you have time during your visit, you can not miss the spectacular viewpoint of Monte de San Pedro, somewhat away from the heart of the city, but which has probably the best panoramic view of it.
The Tower of Hercules and the entire bay of A Coruña can be seen from its top, an expanse of grass and vegetation that takes us even further away from the urban noise. What today is a park, with a picnic area and even a high-quality gastronomic offer, was once a strategic enclave for the defence of the city, which is not surprising given the field of vision that it allows from its top.
To take full advantage of the potential of Monte de San Pedro, in addition to the road and footpath that allow access, there is also a panoramic elevator to reach the top from the promenade. There is no excuse not to go!
